The hemp plant has been a subject of major controversy over the years. When hearing the word hemp, most people think of the compound THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which is known for its mind-altering effects. Others argue that THC provides health benefits that can boost wellness.

In the 1960’s scientists began to do extensive research on the cannabis plant. Their studies revealed that there are other compounds in hemp that produced health benefits similar to those THC provides, but without the psychoactive effects. Once of these compounds is CBD (cannabinol).

Today, CBD has grown to become very popular in the world of natural health. But it is still largely misunderstood among certain groups of people.

This article will take a close look at what we do know about CBD, providing information on how it works in the human body and the potential benefits it can offer.

What is CBD?

CBD is one of the 113 currently  known cannabinoids in the  cannabis plant. It is non-  psychoactive, meaning it does  not produce a high or any mind-  altering effects. In clinical trials,  it has been found to provide a  wide range of health benefits  including a reduction of pain and anxiety.

The compound can be extracted from the hemp plant in many ways, but carbon dioxide extraction is the most efficient.

This method uses carbon dioxide to extract the CBD oil from the plant matter. It can be extracted from any part of the plant including the stem, stalk, leaves and flowers.

How Does CBD Work in the Body?

Scientists do not fully understand how CBD works to produce the desired effects in the body, but they are certain that the endocannabinoid system plays a major role.

The endocannabinoid system consists of three primary components, endocannabinoids, receptors and enzymes. Here is a review of each one’s role in the body.

Endocannabinoids

Endocannabinoids are molecules that are similar to cannabinoids, but they are made by your body. So far, scientists have identified two key endocannabinoids, anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG). They work to keep your body running smoothly.

Receptors

Endocannabinoid receptors are found throughout your body. The two main types are as follows:

  • CB1 receptors: These are mostly found in the central nervous system. They are responsible for controlling coordination, movement, pain, appetite, memory, mood and other functions.
  • CB2 receptors: These are found in the peripheral nervous system. They are responsible for influencing pain and inflammation.

Endocannabinoids can bind to either receptor. When they merge, effects vary depending on where the receptor is located and which receptor it binds to.

For example, endocannabinoids may bind to the CB1 receptors in the spine which may relieve back pain. They may also bind to the CB2 receptors in your immune cells and reduce inflammation.

Enzymes

Then there are the enzymes.

The enzymes break down the endocannabinoids after they have carried out their function. The main types of enzymes are as follows:

  • Fatty acid amide hydrolase which breaks down AEA
  • Monoacylglycerol acid lipase which breaks down 2-AG

CBD and other cannabinoids are similar to endocannabinoids in the way they function in the body. The main difference is that they are not made by the body, rather they come from an outside source.

It is also believed that they do not directly bind to the receptors. Rather, they influence the receptors to produce beneficial effects.

CBD Benefits

CBD works to produce several types of benefits in the body. Here are some of the advantages it could provide.

CBD Oil as an Anti-Inflammatory

CBD oil is known to have anti-inflammatory properties that can be very effective. By boosting serotonin and reducing inflammation, using CBD oil could have a positive impact on:

  • Arthritis: Animal studies have shown an improvement in pain and inflammation in arthritic rats who were administered with high doses of topical CBD.
  • Cancer Related Pain: Many cancer patients experience pain due to tumors, treatments and surgeries. CBD has been shown to reduce cancer related pain when used in conjunction with opioids and administered as a spray or extract.
  • Migraine Pain: Studies show that CBD may be effective in reducing migraine pain when administered at higher doses and used in conjunction with THC.

CBD for Anxiety

Research shows that CBD may be effective in relieving anxiety and anxiety-related conditions. Animal studies have shown it can be helpful in treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Other studies have shown that it may reduce symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD), post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety induced insomnia. There is also promising evidence that it may help patients living with schizophrenia.

CBD for Weight Loss

There is evidence that CBD may help you lose weight.

While CBD’s sister compound, THC, causes hunger, there is evidence that CBD may have the opposite effect and may decrease appetite. The theory is that it works as a CB1 receptor antagonist blocking hormones that increase appetite.

The compound has also been shown to convert white, or bad fat, into brown, or good fat. Brown fat cells are an active form of fat that burns off energy to burn calories.

CBD’s ability to help burn fat can result in weight loss which, in turn, can reduce the risk of incurring diabetes, heart disease and other types of serious illness.

CBD and Brain Health

Researchers at California’s Salk Institute conducted a 2017 study that showed that CBD could be useful in improving brain health and fighting dementia. The results have been validated by other laboratories.

CBD improves outcomes in people with dementia in three ways. It reduces inflammation, it reduces oxygen buildup, and it works as a brain stimulant and neuroprotectant. It may also reduce anxiety and stress in those dealing with dementia.

Different Types of CBD Products

The world of CBD can be difficult to navigate. One of the reasons is that there are so many ways to use it. Here are some examples.

  • CBD Oil: CBD comes in oil form and can be taken orally with a dropper.
  • Edibles: CBD comes in variety of edible forms. It is usually sold as gummies which is a great way to take it as a supplement, but it can also be found in shakes and other food products.
  • Vape: CBD oil can be added to a vape and smoked. Vape pens make for a discreet way to enjoy the benefits the compound has to offer.
  • Gel Capsules: You can also take CBD as a supplement in capsule form.
  • Topical CBD: Topical CDB can be applied directly to areas of pain to provide relief.

The type of CBD you choose will depend on your personal tastes and needs. Different varieties may also last longer and hit faster. Do some research and talk to your budtender to find the one that’s right for you.

A Word of Warning

Even though CBD is gaining in popularity, it is still a new market. As a result, it is highly unregulated. Therefore, some brands are not entirely honest about the quality of their products.

Often, the CBD content is not true to what’s actually stated on the bottle. It can also contain THC and other substances even though these are not advertised in the product description.

To be sure you are getting an effective product, buy from a brand you can trust. There are many reviews online that will give you a good idea as to whether or not you are purchasing from a reputable supplier.

Additionally, many brands do third party testing. This is a process that verifies the CBD content and quality of the product. The brands that test will typically post results online so you can see exactly what you are getting before you make a purchase.
